At the end of the 18th century housecoats increasingly featured the characteristics of an overcoat, such as setin sleeves, pockets, and a collar. The glazed cotton fabric of this housecoat was made in Europe. Printed cotton with delicate floral motifs on a dark ground was widely produced in Europe before the end of the 18th century. The coarse chequered lining known as ‘Harlinger bont’ was made in the city of Harlingen.
